Bolton Valley Unveils First Wind Turbine at a Vermont Ski Resort
Alteris Renewables-installed wind turbine reinforces Bolton Valley’s green mission
BOLTON VALLEY, VT – November 12, 2009 - Bolton Valley Resort today became the first ski area in Vermont and only the second in the nation to utilize wind power from an on-site wind turbine. Bolton Valley’s 100 kilowatt wind turbine, located at the top of the resort’s Vista Quad lift, will produce the equivalent amount of electricity consumed by 40-to-45 Vermont homes annually.
“This is a watershed moment for the Vermont ski industry and in many ways the energy industry in Vermont,” said Larry Williams, who with Doug Nedde, owns Bolton Valley. “We’ve demonstrated a commitment to 21st century approaches to energy generation and consumption solutions on a Vermont scale. Bolton Valley and its skiers and riders take great pride in being eco-friendly and will continue to work toward decreasing our impact on the environment.”
The wind turbine was installed by Alteris Renewables which has a major presence in Waitsfield, VT and was recently ranked the fastest growing renewable energy company in the Northeast on the Inc. 500. The turbine, a Northwind 100 manufactured by Northern Power Systems of Barre, measures 121 feet in height from the ground to the top of the tower. The distance from ground to the top of the blade is 156 feet. Each blade is coated with Teflon to protect against icing. Funding for the project came in part from the Vermont Clean Energy Development Fund.
“With the installation of this innovative turbine, our wind division has demonstrated we can successfully deliver solutions in the most challenging circumstances,” said Bob Chew, president of Alteris Renewables Wind Business Unit. “We’re proud to be working with visionary clients like Bolton who have a commitment to moving our energy economy toward a sustainable future.”
Work began in mid September preparing the site and the work-road to the top of the mountain where an existing clearing adjacent to a patrol hut was selected as the turbine’s location. Heavy-duty equipment was moved up the mountain and the turbine was moved in sections for assembly on-site. Local craftspeople and subcontractors were utilized for the project.
The turbine will feed power not consumed by Bolton Valley into the electrical grid through the Vermont net metering program.
Williams and Nedde, who are also partners in Burlington-based Redstone Group, the market leader in full-service commercial real estate, have initiated a resort-wide program to improve energy efficiency and recycling efforts. Bolton Valley is located midway between Burlington and Montpelier, serving a growing base of skiers and riders from the Capital and Queen City regions.
